Last Sunday was the Plymouth half marathon, the weather was fantastic, too hot for the runners though really. I wasn't running however, i was drumming! Our African drumming group- Drum Elburton were at the half way mark to cheer on and support the runners. I expected it to be fun, but didn't realise what a buzz it would be. The runners were really appreciative , and were clapping and thanking us for being there as they ran past.It was such a great atmosphere and I was on such a high afterwards. It felt good that we had helped the runners along, and the whole experience sort of sealed the deal.... I think I'm going to enter the half marathon next year!
It sounds a bit mad in the cold light of day, less than a year ago I couldn't run more than a few metres, but I really love running now, and have actually managed 7 miles. I really want to do this to prove to myself what I can achieve. I've added a running record into the sidebar of this blog, so I can keep a track of how I'm doing. I'm going to be realistic- maybe I'm not up to it physically, but I won't know unless i give it a try. So I'm going to do the training as if I'm going to be entering and we'll see how it goes. If (when ) i do it i think I'll raise money for cancer research as i know so many people who have died or been affected by the condition, and I'd like to have my grandad's name / picture on my t-shirt. He passed away a couple of years ago, and i always felt close to him , and know he would've been proud of me doing it so i'd like to run for him, and I think having him in mind will spur me on.

Random facts....
I'm in the process of putting together a jar of random facts for a birthday present, and just came across this fact that I had to share...
"The largest number of children born to one woman is recorded at 69. From 1725-1765, a Russian peasant woman gave birth to 16 sets of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets."

Sculptures at Delamore
On Sunday we finally made it to the sculpture exhibition held annually in May at Delamore near Cornwood, just outside of plymouth. We've been intending to go for the last couple of years but I'm pleased to say we finally did it.The weather was fantastic and we had a great time exploring the garden discovering all sorts of sculptures. I think the leaflet said there was something like 120 in total.
I was really surprised at the variety of styles of work. There were some really cool things made from recycled metal such as the bird above.
I loved the mosaic mirrors that were dotted around under trees, and would love to have a go at making something like that myself.
Unsurprisingly , one of Joe's favourites was the metal dinosaur.
And both Joe and Maisie loved the baby elephant.
This wooden seat had the words "love" and "hope" carved into the top of it.
And I loved this sort of goddess figure, I think it could make a great starting point for a rag rug or some sort of textile piece....oh so much inspiration!
Although the scupltures and garden are only open in May the trail led down to a nice little gallery in delamore which is open all year round , so we may pop down there some time to see what's going on, and we'll definitely go and visit the exhibition again next year.

National Family week
Next week 25th- 31st May is National family week, and if you go to this website, you can click on the map and find out about events happening in your area. There are all sorts of things planned, including story times in libraries, activities in museums, big picnics, sports activities and walks. Lots of the activities are free, there are also some e-vouchers available such as "kids eat free at pizza hut" and cheaper adult entrance to legoland. A site definitely worth checking out if you're wondering what to do over the half-term break.

Fabric coil pot

Some time ago ( probably about 2 years ago now), I found this book at a craft fair at Westpoint, and just had to have it! There were so many things I wanted to have a go at, well I have finally had a go at making something inspired by the fantastic ideas in the book.
I love the 3D structures and vessels made from wrapped and coiled fabric such as the one above. So I started by making lots of wrapped fabric "snakes" (Maisie's description), then sewing them together in a fairly random way. I didn't have a plan of what I was making, it was just a chance to experiment. It's turned into quite an organic shape, sort of reminds me of a squid!- at the moment I'm not sure whether to work on it further or just to leave it as a little trial piece.
Having had a play I decided to have a go at making a fabric bowl. Above is the start of the base.
And here's the finished piece!I'm really pleased with it for a first attempt, and I'll definitely have a go at making some more. It didn't take too much fabric, it's ideal for using up oddments, thereby reducing waste and great for recycling. I think they could make nice little presents perhaps filled with smellies/ homemade cakes/ biscuits?
Below I've scanned the instructions from the book which might be useful if you fancy having a go yourself.

another 101 completed!
On Thursday I completed another of my 101 goals, to get a facial. I decided to reward myself with the facial for having completed another of my goals- to run 5 miles. It was worth every penny because for an hour..
1. I was made to be still .... very rare
2.I enjoyed peace and tranquility
3. I was pampered and looked after
4. I felt indulged
5. I was the most relaxed I've been for a very long time.... I felt quite spaced out for a while afterwards.
When can I go again? :)

learning to be patient, and listen
On Monday I wrote about how I'd had "one of those days", things just kept conspiring against me. It seemed that something was trying to stop me from sending out the letters to wildlife parks etc try and promote Andy's new cards. Why oh why didn't I listen? It's weird because when it was happening i even thought to myself - why is someone trying to stop me doing this?- but then instantly pushed the thought from my head and carried on. Then when writing the post it hit me that someone/ something was maybe trying to teach me to be patient. But again I didn't listen. On Tuesday the cards and samples were sent out so I felt very pleased with myself, but then on Wednesday a friend who'd i'd asked to proof read the letter got back to me with some brilliant advice about how to re-word the letter and jig the layout to make it more effective...arrrgggghhh....why didn't I wait?
I sent the draft letter to 4 friends , and got replies from 2 before sending them out, both of which picked up on typos but otherwise thought it looked ok, so I went ahead. I'd waited a week, which for me is a long time to be patient when i want to get something done. But now I so wish I'd just waited a little longer. The saving grace is that I only sent out 8 letters in the original format, and my plan is to send out at least another 10. Hopefully the cards will speak for themselves and I may get a response from some of those letters...but if nothing else it has taught me a lesson- now I just have to learn from it.
I was reading on Steel Kitten's blog the other day about reinforcing good habits/ ideas/ mantras etc through needlework, I'm now thinking that I should make a piece with the words "be patient" and "listen" on. Another thing to add to the to-do list, but I think it could be a powerful reminder.

New look
Hi , yes it's still me , thought I'd try a new page layout. Joe was looking over my shoulder as I typed the other day, and said "why don't you get rid of the dots". I must admit since starting the blog it hadn't really occurred to me to change the lay-out, but after he pointed it out, i thought why not.So here's it is, hope you like it.

Our pixie/ fairy dell
At the weekend we began turning a little corner of the garden into a pixie/ fairy dell. We've got quite a mature twisted willow tree , and beneath it we've left it a bit wild, so plants such as lemon balm, primroses and sweet majoram have self seeded there.
Joe's clay bug
Maisie and i made wire and bead dragonflies to hang in the tree. The Joe and Maisie made little clay faces on the tree, we did this at Occombe farm a few weeks ago, they loved it so much that i thought they could do the same at home. Obviously the leaves will die off but hopefully the faces will remain. Joe's clay face
We've got 2 stone goblins in the garden which i'm going to rehome under the tree and we've already got a big stone toadstool under there so it's all coming together.Apparently the curved piece on Maisie's face is a telephone!- that's just so typical of her, she's obsessed with phones.
I'd like to make some little pixie and fairy figures that they can play with and hide out there, ideally i'd like them to be weather -proof so they can be left out, but so far I've not worked out how to do this, if anyone has any ideas they'd be gratefully recieved. I'm wondering whether peg-doll type figures may work?

wading through the mud
It's been a strange day today. We had such a lovely weekend, very relaxed and carefree, then today felt like we were wading through mud or swimming against the tide. Nothing disastrous happened, but lots of little barriers seemed to be in our way. I wanted to print off some letters and get them in the post, but the printer was out of ink, so I took the lap top out to the studio to use Andy's printer (which had been working fine all morning until that point), then that decided it didn't want to work. We tried all sorts , and wasted loads of time trying to get it up and running again, which we eventually did by which time the morning had gone and I had to collect Maisie from preschool, so the letters will have to wait until tomorrow.
All the people Andy tried to ring today about the falconry festival we're going to be exhibiting at were unavailable, time is ticking by and we need to sort things out, and he spent far too much time trying to get answers to the things we need to know.
The queue at the post office was unbelievable when i went to post my sister in laws present.
The owner of the framers wasn't there when i called round so we still don't know if they want to stock the new cards.
etc etc.............
Weirdly though I didn't feel too stressed, i just felt like someone was trying to tell us something. Reading this back now I'm wondering if it's to do with being patient, and appreciating that you can't control everything.
The positive things for today though were;
fabulous weather for drying the laundry, i managed to get all the beds stripped , bedding washed and back on before bed time.
Maisie and I made some yummy gingerbread men after tea, must have been good, Joe ate 2 straight off!
A friend of Andy's, whose children are grown-up, generously gave Joe and Maisie a big box of lego to share, they were thrilled and had a great time rummaging through to find all the good bits.
I've signed us up for mobile broadband so we can get internet access out in the studio, so i can work out there at a desk in a work -type environment instead of sat on our bed which isn't doing my back much good.
Richard sent us the first proofs for the calendar of andy's work, for 2010, and they look great.
When I look back at this it sounds like a really busy and productive day, funny how it didn't feel like that at the time!

simple pleasures from this weekend
I realised the other day that I haven't done a "simple pleasures" type post for a while. I think making an effort to focus on the positives in your life, is really important, it's all too easy to get bogged down in negative stuff, instead we should try and remember all the things we are grateful for.
So here's some simple pleasures from this weekend;
1. Visiting the Duchy square centre for creativity at Princetown, really inspirational.
2. Finding a really nice park by chance at Yelverton... great another free activity for weekends and school holidays!
3. Having tea outside in the garden yesterday.
4. Starting , with the help of Joe and Maisie , to turn a little corner of the garden into a fairy/ pixie dell. ( i'll post more details plus photos in a day or so)
5. Starting to make a bowl from coiled fabric. ( again more details and photos to come)

Ant prevention
Just before bed time last night Joe came running up to me very pleased with himself " I've done the chalk thing" he said. I hadn't a clue what he was talking about ,so he took me into the lounge and pointed at the floor, then I remembered that I'd told him I'd read somewhere that instead of using ant powder you can draw a line of chalk and apparently ants will be repelled by it. So that's what he'd done. The way he'd done it though looked like one of those theme park barriers so i had visions of coming down this morning to find ants queued up ala Alton towers. We left it there to try it, but i did point out to him there was perhaps a fatal flaw in his plan... he's left the back door wide open! ( there weren't any ants this morning , so maybe the chalk works?)

Photos from bank holiday monday
On Monday morning I took Joe and Maisie to Stover country park near Newton Abbot,I haven't been for a few years but the kids went a few weeks ago with andy's parents so they were keen to show me around. It's free to get in and the parking is cheap , there's a great visitors centre and lovely walks around the lake including a children's sculpture trail, which is where i took the photos. They had a great time running around looking for the "animals" , some of which are quite well hidden.
They couldn't resist posing like the squirrel!
At the moment the picnic area is being revamped so we ate in the car, which for some reason they think is very exciting, even though we end up picnicking in the car fairly regularly... simple pleasures.
We'll definitley go back again soon as they're very keen to show daddy, and I'll try to remember to take something to feed the ducks as hadn't thought to do that this time.

Decluttering my mind
I've been wondering what to blog about for the last couple of days, my mind feels like one of those spider diagrams (i think that's what they're called, you draw them when you're brain storming an idea or revising, put an idea in the middle then draw lines all around and add thoughts/ facts/ ideas etc.), but my spider diagram has got a bit muddled and my mind seems to be working over time. None of the individual little thoughts seem worth blogging about but I think I need to just declutter my mind by spilling it all out here. So here goes, waffle time...
Well firstly there were no blog posts for a few days because we went to Butlins, we had a great time. I think Butlins is one of those places it's easy to be snobby about, but actually if you have got kids you shouldn't knock it until you've tried it. We went for the half board option , more expensive but worth every penny as it meant I got a holiday too! There was loads to do, the pool was fantastic and the kids loved the shows. Maisie was just in heaven with all that singing and dancing and Joe thought the gunge show was great. They already want to know when we're going back. We ate way too much though and now I'm wondering how much exercise it's going to take to shift the Butlin's bulge. We packed in as much as we could during our few days, so consequently we came back worn out, it was a good job it was a bank holiday weekend to get over it.
Top tip from this weekend.... dont' go on the internet when you're running a bath.
Last night I got the kids to bed and did about an hour's worth of the ironing mountain, before deciding I really needed a soak in the bath. I'd spent all afternoon in the garden digging up dead stuff ( not sure why so much has died this winter) and pulling up brambles with my bare hands. (well I did have gloves on, but you wouldn't think it to look at the state of my poor hands) So anyway I decided I would just check the emails and reply to a friend's message on facebook while the bath was running. It always takes ages to fill, but it seems the saying a watched pot never boils also applys to a bath being filled. Thank god our bath is big , and that the"pathwords" game on facebook wasn't working , I only just got in there before the bath overflowed! I was annoyed with myself for wasting so much water, and it was hotter than I'd ever known it so I then had to empty a bit and let it cool before i could get in. I stayed in there as long as possible afterwards to make up for it.
I've decided to reward myself for achieving my target of running 5 miles, by booking a facial, it's one of my 101 list so it'll be killing 2 birds with one stone, so I must get on the phone and try and arrange that for sometime in the next week or so.
Crosswords....arrrrgggghhhh! God are they frustrating. One of my 101 is to complete one. Up until now I've only ever managed about half of one before giving up. I'd sort of decided that some people can obviously do them and some can't, and that I fall into the 2nd category. But then I decided not to be defeatist and put this challenge on my list. I bought a new puzzle book a couple of weeks ago, and after avoiding the crosswords for a few days decided to give it a go again. This time I decided when I got stuck I would use a dictionary to help me , which did work and I nearly did it, but 2 answers failed me. I tried another one a couple of days ago , but still no luck. But I've decided to tackle it like the running, after all last august when I started , I couldn't even jog a mile without stopping for walk breaks along the way, and now ( when my mind and body are working together) I can jog/run for 5 miles. So I'll keep trying with the crosswords and let you know when I've finally conquered one. I'm feeling in need of a bit of brain trining, I think it's because I've been doing so much crafty stuff and now I need to use other bits of my brain to get them back up to speed.
Another of my 101 is to cook an indian dish, I normally just get one of those jars of sauce and pour it over the meat, but i really want to cook something properly. I was talking to my friend Mel and she said she's got a really good book of curries and they're easy to do , so next time I see her I'll borrow the book and see what I think.
Oh, something else about the running, to keep things interesting a couple of times recently(including this morning), instead of pounding the streets , I've gone to the playing fields, done a lap of jogging to warm up then, 2 or 3 more laps where I've alternated sprinting for 10-20 seconds then jogging for a minute or 2. It was such an adrenaline rush. At the grand old age of 35 I seriously can't remember the last time I really ran like that, it's quite a boost to realise that my body can move that fast ( if only for a short burst), I should point out that I am aware that to onlookers it may not look as fast as it feels to me! But no matter about that it was great, and made me feel really strong, and also grateful to have a body that can do it. It's so easy to take something like that for granted which makes me think I should push myself more , obviously not to injure myself , but just to see what I can achieve. Hopefully I'll add another mile or maybe 2 to my best by the time I reach the anniversary of when I started.
Ok that feels better, my head feels a little clearer time to go and get some lunch.
